We chose to review Royal Bingo and After Dinner Amusements: Family Time.
I can't resist anything to do with the Royal Family, and my 10-year-old has recently taken a serious liking to playing bingo, so this seemed like the perfect choice. This game is played just like any bingo game, with one fun twist: Instead of numbers on the bingo cards, there are members of royal families from around the world. The first thing I noticed about this game was the high quality of it. The pieces are very sturdy and well made, and the royal token pieces come in a sturdy cloth bag for storage. No flimsy zipper-top bags here! I also love the educational aspect of this game. Kids (and adults!) will learn about not only well-known royals such as Prince William and Prince Harry, but also about lesser-known names such as Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden. The instruction booklet includes biographies of every person in the game, so learning opportunities abound. And the bingo markers are little crowns! How cute is that?
After Dinner Amusements: Family Time is a open-ended question game designed to stimulate conversation between family members. Questions like, "Describe your family in five words," and "What is your favourite season of the year, and why?" are the perfect conversation kickstarters.
There are lots of things to love about After Dinner Amusements: Family Time. First, I love the fact that it's a game the entire family can play together. You might want to have a pen and paper handy to write down the funny and insightful things your little ones say! I also love the open-ended aspect of this game. Instead of simply asking "Would you rather do A or B?" the questions inspire thoughtfulness and discussion. I love the fact that it is a screen-free way for family members to spend time together, something I feel most families could use these days. Finally, I absolutely love the compact size of this game! The whole game, including the tin, fits in the palm of my hand. Not only does that make it perfect for stashing in a kitchen drawer for playing at the dinner table, I plan to toss it into my purse the next time we take a road trip (which is going to be this weekend!). It's also ideal for toting along to a restaurant for keeping hungry little ones (and grown ups!) distracted while they wait for the food to arrive. It's going to be a mainstay in my bag. And because the answers are open-ended, everyone's answers could be different each time, so the play value is endless!
