It's Christmas Time in the City!

Unless you know me IRL, you probably don't know that although I live in a small town now, I was born and raised in Toronto. Although I lived in a suburb, there was nothing like heading downtown to the heart of the city to see the lights, the parade, the decorated store windows, and all of the festive pageantry that the holiday season brought with it. Every time I see posts from friends "back home," it makes me so nostalgic for those days.

That upbringing in the city is the the reason my favourite christmas song is "Silver Bells," and it's also the reason I absolutely loved the book I'm about to tell you about.

New York Christmas, by LIsa Nieschlag and Lars Wentrup immediately takes me back to those days. The city may be different, but that feeling of holiday magic and celebration amidst the hustle and bustle of busy city life is the same. This book is a treasure trove of not only recipes that are perfect for sharing during the holidays, but also stories and photos that will beautifully illustrate the appeal of Christmastime in the city. Flipping through this book made me at once so nostalgic for those childhood days in Toronto and also longing to visit New York at the holidays, too. The recipes are celebratory but doable, and each comes with a beautiful photo. There are things like Spaghetti and Meat Balls, Carrot Cake with Coconut Frosting, Spicy Pumpkin Soup with Ginger Cream, and a divine Glazed Pork Roast recipe that would make the perfect centerpiece to a Christmas meal. (Actually, if you're not making turkey, I'm not coming to your holiday dinner, but make this on Boxing Day and I'm there). From the food to the photos, everything about this book screams "Christmas time in the city," and I absolutely love it.

This book would make a wonderful gift for anyone who lives in the city, has moved away, or longs to travel to New York at holiday time. The stories, recipes, and photos combine to create a beautiful love letter to one of the world's great cities at the most wonderful time of the year.
