It seems as though everyone has a memory of watching Mary Poppins, that iconic, magical movie of how a nanny dropped from the sky and changed the lives of two children, Jane and Michael, forever. I'm certainly one of those people and, despite not having been a child for quite some time, would gladly and willingly watch that movie on any given day. There's just something so enchanting about it, isn't there?
So, when I first heard that there was going to be a sequel, I did a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious double-take! What? A sequel to MARY POPPINS?? It was too good to be true. My family and I went to the movie on opening night, and I can tell you for sure it was wonderful! It was, as you might say, "Practically perfect in every way."
But, we're not here to discuss the movie. Oh, no. We are here to discuss a new novel that tells the story the new movie. Adapted into novel form by Kathy McCullough, Mary Poppins Returns is a junior novel with a recommended reading age of 8-12 years. (But, I'm 42 and would have no issue recommending it).
When we once again meet Mary Poppins in this new tale, Jane and Michael are all grown up, and Michael and his children are mourning the loss of Michael's wife and things in the Banks house aren't going well, to say the least. Mary Poppins shows up -- as she always does -- just when the family needs her most, bringing her signature blend of no-nonsense rules and inexplicable magic. The result is a story that will delight lovers of the original story and at the same time introduce a new generation into the world of Mary Poppins as well.
Mary Poppins Returns Deluxe Novelization is 256 pages and includes an 8-page full-colour insert with still photos from the film.
If you happen to still need a last-minute gift for a young (or not-so-young!) Mary Poppins fan on your list, this is a great choice.
My review copy of this book was kindly provided to me compliments of Raincoast Books.
